NYer of the Week
The latest New Yorker of the Week teaches the study of timekeeping and watchmaking to the residents of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. NY1's Roma Torre filed the following report.
Local watchmaker Steven Richardson wants to teach people in his neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn the joys of horology, the study of timekeeping, and the history, mechanics and art of watchmaking.
"Time is one of the most precious things that we have and to study it, to study horology is just a great thing," says Richardson. "It's a great passion of mine and I thought I could just share it with the community."
Last year at the Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA, Richardson started a free watchmaking class called the "Art of Horology Project."

I saw this segment a few minutes ago and I let out something between a squeal and a shout. Start talking about "time" in the cosmic sense, and I'm all ears. Start talking about timepieces and horology, and I'm over the moon. :)
ReplyDeleteI. LOVE. watches. I've thought about being a watchmaker. As I type I'm looking at a yellowed newspaper clipping that I've had tacked to my cork board for years. It's a brief write-up on clock and watch repair. I guess I was inspired because the watchmaker being interviewed was a woman. But what caught me by surprise when I saw you on NY 1 was seeing an African American so invested in the art of horology and teaching it to others (in the neighborhood I was born and raised too)! I guess there's hope for me yet.
Congratulations Mr. Richardson on the wonderful project and on being named NY 1's NYer of the Week!
